Bearcats Start 2007 at Upper Iowa

MARYVILLE - (match notes) Northwest Missouri State soccer begin 2007 at Upper Iowa on Aug. 24 for a 5 p.m. meeting with the Peacocks. The trip will be the first to Fayette, Iowa, for Northwest after hosting Upper Iowa the previous two meetings at Bearcat Pitch.

Northwest remains undefeated (2-0) against Upper Iowa since the Peacocks moved to Division II in 2005. In the first match on Sept. 9, 2005, Northwest needed two overtimes to secure a 2-1 win in the 113th minute. A year later, the Bearcats posted their third shutout of 2006 in a 2-0 win.

The Bearcats carry a school-record three-match winning streak against non-conference opponents dating back to Sept. 2, 2006. Northwest is also looking for its third straight non-loss to open the season, after defeating York (Neb.) 7-0 at the start of 2006 and tying with Wayne (Neb.) State to open 2005.

A win would also tie fifth-year head coach Tracy Hoza for the most wins in school history. She would tie Joann Wolf with 22 wins atop of the school career coaching mark. Wolf was the inaugural coach for the Bearcats from 1999-2002.

Also in career records, senior midfielder Marti Trummer is looking to build her lead on the school assists mark. She sits with nine, with her last assist coming against Upper Iowa in 2006. She has also tallied 96 shots, good for third on school career records. She needs 11 to take second all-time.

Senior defender Amy Jackson anchors a backfield that includes senior midfielder Brittany Cash and junior defender Jessica Braun. Jackson recorded four goals last season, three on penalty kicks, to tie for 10th in all-time school career records. Cash led all players with 1,706 minutes in 2006 while Braun led defenders with 1,702 minutes. The Bearcat defense allowed only 25 goals last season, lowering the previous school record of 33 set in 2005.

Junior goalkeeper Lauren Hodgson is expected to earn the start for Friday. Hodgson will be making her first start, replacing four-year goalkeeper Alison Sheridan.

Upper Iowa will see a new general on the bench as Brian Bahl enters his first season with the Peacocks. He spent the previous two seasons at the University of Northern Iowa and will have two returning All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honorees to begin the season.

Junior midfielder Jennifer Lee earned second-team honors, leading the Peacocks with 13 points (two goals, nine assists). Sophomore defender Christine Dwyer picked up honorable mention accolades, starting 17 of 19 matches.

Upper Iowa will be seeing its second MIAA opponent in as many days. Missouri Western is scheduled to play the Peacocks on Aug. 23 at 2 p.m.
