Northwest Takes Central Missouri to 2-2 Tie

MARYVILLE, Mo. - (T 2-2) Northwest Missouri State senior Kayla Griffin scored in the 87th minute to even the score at 2, but neither team could use the additional periods to its advantage as Northwest and Central Missouri ended in a 2-2 tie at Bearcat Pitch this afternoon. The tie is the first for the Bearcats since a 1-1 result against Central Missouri on Nov. 5, 2005 in Maryville, Mo.

The Bearcats move to 9-8-1 and 5-7-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) action. The Jennies move to 11-4-3 and 6-4-3 in the MIAA.

Senior midfielder Jamie Campbell opened scoring in the 10th minute off an assist from senior midfielder Megan Kruger. Campbell's third goal of the season moves her into a tie for seventh in career scoring with six, and marked the 25th by the team this season, a new team record.

Central Missouri used goals in the second half from Hazel Cox and Carrie Twellman to take a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute, before Griffin used a pass from sophomore midfielder Holly Ramaeker to tie the match late in regulation. Griffin's seventh goal of the season moves her into a tie for second in career goals with 13.

The Bearcats held an advantage in shots (20-17), outshooting the Jennies 4-1 in the two overtime periods. Senior goalkeeper Alison Sheridan made six saves to match her 2005 season saves total of 84, tieing for sixth in season records.

Northwest will end the 2006 season tomorrow against Truman State in a 1 p.m. match. The start time is one hour earlier than originally released.

NOTES: Northwest remains unbeaten under Coach Cross when playing Central Missouri at home (1-0-2) ... The Bearcats need a tie or a win tomorrow against Truman State to record the first winning season in Northwest history. The team has already secured the best winning percentage in school history ... Northwest remains unbeaten when scoring first (9-0-1) and when leading at halftime (7-0-1) this season ... The team's 256 shots this season is second all-time behind the 297 recorded in 2004 ... Griffin's five shots led all players and moves her into seventh in all-time season shot records. She also moves into a tie for second in all-time season goals ... The Bearcats are tied for ninth in the latest NSCAA/adidas regional rankings while the Jennies are tied with Truman State for fifth.
