Bearcats Fall 3-0 to No. 24 Missouri Southern in Final Road Match
JOPLIN, Mo. - (L 0-3) Northwest Missouri State soccer closed out its 2006 road campaign in 3-0 loss to No. 24 Missouri Southern this afternoon. The Bearcats move to 9-8 and 5-7 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action. Missouri Southern improves to 10-3-4, 8-1-3 in the MIAA.
Senior forward Kayla Griffin led the Bearcats with two shots, with one on goal. Senior midfielder Jamie Campbell and sophomore defender Samantha Knuckles each recorded a shot on goal within the final three minutes of play in an attempt to put the Bearcats on the board.
Senior goalkeeper Alison Sheridan recorded seven saves off 17 shots. Freshman goalkeeper Brandy Taylor entered the match in the 80th minute to record one save from three shots.
Megan Walker and Lauren Kurelac each scored in the first half for Missouri Southern, followed by a goal by Erin Gfeller in the 75th minute.
The Bearcats will return home this weekend for the final two home matches of the season. Northwest will take on Central Missouri on Oct. 28 and Truman State on Oct. 29, with both matches starting at 2 p.m.
NOTES: Northwest is ranked 10th in the NCAA Central Region poll released Oct. 11 ... The Lions have won five of the past six matches played at Hal Boden Field at Joplin, Mo. ... The Bearcats are now 1-1 against Missouri Southern when the Lions are ranked, after defeating No. 21 Missouri Southern 1-0 on Oct. 15, 2005 at Bearcat Pitch ... Northwest is on track to set the season record in fewest goals allowed this season, standing with 19 goals allowed with two matches remaining. The record is 33, set in 2005.
