Kayla Griffin Named MIAA Player of the Week
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Northwest Missouri State senior forward Kayla Griffin (Lee's Summit, Mo.) earned Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA)/Brine Player of the Week honors, announced by conference offices this afternoon. The award is the second for Griffin in her career, who also earned honors for the week ending Oct. 17, 2005.
Griffin scored two goals against Missouri Western on Oct. 7, moving into a tie for fourth in school season goals scored with six. Her third game-winning goal of the season, scored in the 50th minute against the Griffons, is the most for an individual athlete in a single season since Rory Okey in 2000. Griffin also led all players with five shots in the Oct. 7 match.
Northwest won its school record eighth match this season on Oct. 7, surpassing the seven matches won in 2000. The Bearcats recorded 16 shots on goal, the most in a conference match since 21 against Missouri Southern on Oct. 27, 2004.
Griffin and the Bearcats will stay at home this weekend, welcoming No. 22 Washburn for a 2 p.m. match on Oct. 21 and Emporia State the following day at 3 p.m.
