Northwest Picks Up Sixth Win in 2-1 Victory Over Emporia State
EMPORIA, Kan. - (W 2-1) Senior Amy Jackson and sophomore Shannon FitzGerald each picked up their third goals of the season to lead Northwest Missouri State to a 2-1 victory over Emporia State in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) action this afternoon. The Bearcats improve to 6-3 and 2-2 in the MIAA, while Emporia falls to 3-7 with a 1-3 MIAA record.
The six wins this season are the most for head coach Tracy Cross since coming to Northwest in 2003. The Bearcats last posted six wins in the 2001 season.
Jackson scored in the 30th minute off a penalty kick caused by a hand ball inside the goalie box. The penalty kick was her first since she scored off a penalty kick against Augustana (S.D.) on Sept. 9. Jackson is the first player to score off two penalty kick attempts in a season since Janel Wegehaupt did the same in 1999.
FitzGerald scored her fourth career goal at 61:55 off an assist from junior Erica Sunde. Senior goalkeeper Alison Sheridan picked up a season-high nine saves from 20 shots. Sheridan needs 17 saves to move into sixth on MIAA career charts.
Andrea Harris scored the lone Emporia State goal in the 42nd minute off a breakaway. Amanda Miano of Emporia State led all players with seven shots and four on goal.
Northwest will travel to Warrensburg, Mo., for a 7:00 p.m. match against the University of Central Missouri. The match will mark the third of a five-match road trip for the Bearcats.
