Bearcats Split Weekend at Wayne State Classic
WAYNE, Neb. - (W 7-0 vs. York) (L 0-1 vs. Wayne State) Northwest Missouri State soccer used seven goals to win over York (Neb.) College on Aug. 26, and fell 1-0 to Wayne State (Neb.) today (Sunday). The win against York moved the Bearcats to 4-3-1 in season opening matches, and marked their first season-opening victory since 2003.
Against York, senior Kayla Griffin recorded Northwest's first three goals of the match, including the first recorded hat trick since Beth Gutschenritter accomplished the feat on Nov. 5, 2003. Northwest tallied 20 points (seven goals, six assists) and held York to no shots throughout the contest, the first for both instances since Sept. 8, 2001, when the Bearcats recorded 27 points and held Presentation to zero shots. Sophomore Amanda Deml led the team with five shots, and senior Jamie Campbell's two assists moved her into a tie for fourth in career assists with five.
A goal at 17:10 in the first half by Wayne State's M.A. Liebentritt was the lone score for either team today, as the Bearcats recorded double the shots and less fouls than Wayne State. Freshman Rae Hildreth recorded her first career shots on goal, leading the team with two.
Northwest will open their 2006 home season on Sept. 2 against Concordia-St. Paul at 12 noon. It will be the first of a five-match home stretch at Bearcat Pitch.
