Bearcats Win First Game Against Upper Iowa University in Double Overtime, 2-1
Maryville, Mo . - Northwest Missouri State University wins their first game of the season in double overtime with Upper Iowa University, 2-1. The 'Cats took home a win after tying the last three games in overtime. The 'Cats played without Sophomore Margaret Trummer due to a sprained knee in Wednesday night's game against Washburn.
Transfer from Southwest Baptist Kayla Griffin scored her first goal of the season in the 26th minute leaving the 'Cats ahead through the whole first half. Griffin was assisted by Freshman Jessica Braun. Junior Beth Gutschenritter recieved a yellow card in the first half which continued to the second half resulting a red card after Gutschenritter tallied another yellow card. Gutschenritter will sit out the next home game against Missouri Western.
Upper Iowa University scored in the second half by Kayleen O'Toole in the 63rd minute of the game but it wasn't enough to hold off the 'Cats in double overtime. With a time of 102:22 freshman Shannon Fitzgerald took the win with her first goal ever at Bearcat Pitch. The score came off of a corner kick by Megan Kruger to Junior Amy Jackson then passed to Fitzgerald from 15 yards out for the game winning goal.
Junior Alison Sheridan received her first win of the season with five saves. The Bearcats are now 1-1-2 and will be facing Missouri Western at home on Sept. 14th at 4pm.
