Northwest Ties Washburn 0-0 in MIAA Opener
TOPEKA, Kan. - ( box score) Northwest Missouri State soccer opened up the season with its third straight overtime contest, this time tying 0-0 after two extra sessions against Washburn in the MIAA opener for both teams. This marked the first time in school history that Northwest has had three straight overtime affairs.
Northwest now stands 0-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the MIAA. Washburn sits at 2-1-1 and 0-0-1 in league standings.
Both offenses struggled to get into the scoring zone as Northwest had just seven shots while Washburn tallied 14. Junior goaltender Alison Sheridan posted four saves in 110 minutes while Lady Blues netminder Jenna Hatlestad recorded five saves.
Junior Beth Gutschenritter had four scoring chances for the Bearcats while WU's Jessica Mainx ripped off nine shots with four on goal.
There were a combined 37 fouls whistled, just one game removed from 27 combined in the Northwest match on Friday.
The Bearcats, who are now 2-4-1 in MIAA openers, return home to host nonconference opponent Upper Iowa on Friday, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m.
