Four Sign to Play for Northwest in 2005

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State soccer program added four student-athletes for the 2005 season in Amanda Deml (Lee's Summit, Mo.), Elizabeth "Lizzy" Heintzman (Omaha, Neb.), Abigail "Abby" Hobgood (Kansas City, Mo.) and Megan Newland (Lee's Summit, Mo.), announced second-year head coach Tracy Cross today. All four will enter 2005 as collegiate freshman.

Deml, a 5-9 forward at Lee's Summit North High School, has been a prep teammate of Newland. A three-year varsity letter winner, Deml moved to Missouri from Alaska before her sophomore season. She earned Second Team All-Region honors as a freshman at the midfield position. Most recently, Deml was an Honorable Mention All-Area pick two straight years. A Principles' Honor Roll selection since her sophomore year, Deml was stand-out volleyball player as well. She was a Honorable Mention All-Area selection in 2004.

"Deml has the physical presence to play anywhere on the field," said Cross. "She will add plenty of depth to the Bearcat defense."

Heintzman, a 5-7 midfielder at Millard South High School, was a four-year starter. She was honored three times on the Honorable Mention All-State Team. The three-year letter winner led her club to a state semifinal appearance the last two seasons. Heintzman was a member of the Honor Roll as a freshman and sophomore.

"Lizzy has developed an innate ability to score goals," said Cross. "She will be counted upon to provide some of that scoring mentality next season."

Hobgood, a 5-5 midfielder at Archbishop O'Hara High School, will look to fill a spot in the defensive backfield at Northwest. She excelled her first two seasons as a prep before she was injured her junior year. As a freshman, she was chosen as a Second Team All-Conference member. The following season, Hobgood earned Second Team All-State and All-Region honors. She has also been a member of Bayern Munich, an elite U-18 women's club team based in Kansas City.

"Hobgood is a solid center defender," said Cross. "She makes smart decisions when she has the ball at her feet."

Newland, a 5-8 goalkeeper at Lee's Summit North High School, was a Second Team All-State and Second Team All-Metro honoree as a freshman. In her sophomore season, Newland was tabbed to the First Team Examiner All-Area Team and followed that with an appearance on the Second Team All-Metro Squad in 2003. A member of the Dynamos Club Team from fifth through eighth grade, Newland was a part of a first-place team every season. Newland also was a participant on the Blackfire Renegades club team in high school.

"Newland has had some great high school playing experience in the goal," said Cross. "We are looking forward to having her join the Bearcat soccer team next fall."

Northwest finished 4-16 overall and 3-11 in MIAA play last season and will open up the 2005 campaign at Wayne (Neb.) State on Saturday, Aug. 27.
