'Cats Open at Home With 3-1 Victory Over Washburn

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University soccer team won its home and MIAA opener on Wednesday as the Bearcats defeated the Washburn Lady Blues 3-1.

In the first half there was not much action until the Lady Blues scored the first goal of the game late in the first half. Deidre Gorynski put the ball in the back of the net in the 33rd minute.

Northwest came out in the second half put three goals on the board. The first was from Beth Gutschenritter (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) when she defelected the ball off the goalie from 30 yards out to tie the score 1-1.

In the 74th minute Emily Perkins (Fr., W. Des Moines, Iowa) dribbled up the left side off the field and beat the Lady Blues goal keeper placing the ball in the left corner for the game-winner. Just more than one minute later Becky Marston (So., Cedar Falls, Iowa) added to the score as she rebounded a deflection off Washburn's goal keeper to make the score stand at 3-1.

The Northwest soccer team improved its record to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference. The Washburn Lady blues dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

The Bearcats will return to action on Sunday as they will face Graceland (Iowa) University at 2 p.m. on Bearcat Pitch
