Bearcats Thump Lions, 3-1 in Season Finale
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State women's soccer team ended its 16-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory against Missouri Southern Wednesday. Beth Gutschenritter (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) scored a hat trick to lead the Bearcats to the season-ending victory.
The Bearcats started the game quickly, scoring in the fourth minute. Katie Flower (Jr., Blackjack, Mo.) found Gutschenritter cutting to the goal. Gutschenritter beat the Lions' goal keeper, kicked the ball into the near cornerand gave the 'Cats a 1-0 lead. Later in the first period, Samantha Lee Lions found the back of the net for the Lions and tied the score at 1-1.
The Bearcats came back with a vengeance in the 20th minute when Rory Okey (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) passed the ball in the air to Gutschenritter who got under the ball and placed in the goal over the MSSU keeper. That goal gave the Bearcats the lead for good.
With nine seconds left in the first half, Gutschenritter found the back of the net again. This time, she did it all by herself. She took a blocked pass and put the ball off the lower part of the cross bar. The ball slid off the crossbar and into the near corner. The hat trick was Northwest's first since Sept. 4, 1999, when Reba Korthanke accomplished the feat.
The Bearcats ending up holding onto the victory, as neither team could find the back of the net in the second half. Allison Sheridan (Fr., Lake Tapawingo, Mo.) was in goal for the 'Cats and recorded six saves.
With the victory, the Bearcats end their season with a 3-13-4 overall record and 2-8-4 mark in the MIAA.
