'Cats Win Home Finale, Top Missouri-Rolla, 3-2

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State's Women's Soccer team ended a three game losing-skid with a 3-2 victory over University of Missouri-Rolla on Sunday at Bearcat Pitch. The Bearcats used a big first half to hang on and beat the Miners.

Northwest started off strong as they scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. Kapua Cabreros (Fr., Waiku, Hawaii) and Sarah Wallace (Sr., Raymore, Mo.) found Gina Christianson (Sr., Fremont, Neb.) inside the penalty box where she kicked the ball in the left corner for her first goal of the season. The Bearcats second goal came when Renee Judd (Jr., Pukalani, Hawaii) fed a streaking Cabreros down the field. Cabreros beat the goalkeeper and put the ball in the left corner to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead.

In the 34th minute, the Bearcats added an insurance goal when Raheema Quershi (Soph.,Sedalia, Mo.) and Cabreros connected with Jennifer Gnefkow (Sr,. Raymore, Mo.) in the penalty box. Gnefkow kicked the ball over the goalkeepers head for her second goal of the season.

In the second half, the Miners came out with some fire. Lisa Warner scored in the 64th minute when she beat Bearcat goalkeeper Michelle Goold (Fr., Independence, Mo.) on the let side to make the score 3-1. Rolla scored their second goal after their first shot went off the crossbar. The shot was rebounded by Jessica Shultz and put in the left corner of the goal to score their second goal. The Bearcats played tough defense and shut down the Miner offense to hold on for their third victory of the season.

Goold made nine saves in goal for the Bearcats, while giving up two goals. Wallace lead the offensive attack for the Bearcats with six shots while Cabreros had five shots.

The Bearcats, now 3-13 on the season and 2-8 in MIAA action, continue conference play on Saturday, as they travel to Bolivar for a match-up against Southwest Baptist. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
