'Cats Fall to Missouri Southern, 2-0
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State's Women's Soccer team dropped their third straight game with a loss to Missouri Southern State College on Wednesday. Missouri Southern scored two goals in the first half to lead them to a 2-0 victory.
The game was a struggle at first for both teams as both teams struggled to adjust to the cold, wet weather. Missouri Southern opened the scoring with a goal in the 20th minute when Jenni Johnson found Ashely Munnely in front of the goal. Munnely put the ball in the back of the net to the left of goalkeeper Michelle Goold (Fr., Independence, Mo.). Southern extended their lead in the 32nd minute when Amanda Phipps put the ball in the back of the net. The Bearcats could only muster six shots in the first half, three of them on goal.
In the second half, the game continued to be a struggle for Northwest. The Bearcats pressured the Lady Lions but couldn't find the back of the net. Northwest out-shot Southern in the second half 8-5. With 10 minutes left in the second half, Gina Christianson (Sr., Fremont, Neb.) tried to find Sarah Wallace (Sr., Raymore, Mo.) crossing to the net, but the ball was cut off by the Lady Lions goal keeper to preserve the shutout.
For Northwest, Joni Pusateri (Jr., Belton, Mo.) collected three shots, while three other 'Cats had two shots. Goold allowed two goals, but had saves in net for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats, now 2-13 on the season and 1-8 in MIAA action, continue conference play on Sunday, as they host last-placed Missouri-Rolla. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Bearcat Pitch.
