'Cats Drop MIAA Contest, 2-0 to Central
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State's Women's Soccer team dropped their sixth MIAA contest with a 2-0 loss to Central Missouri State on Saturday at Bearcat Pitch. This also marked the sixth time this season that the Bearcats have been shutout.
The Bearcats came out playing tough defense in the first half, holding the Jennies scoreless in the first half. Northwest outshot Central Missouri State 8-6, but couldn't take advantage of the wind at their backs.
Michelle Goold (Fr., Independence, Mo.) made three saves to keep the Bearcats in the game. With 11:20 left in the half, Jessica Goedeker took a shot for the Jennies that bounced high in the air, but Goold got her hands on the ball and knocked it over the back of the net, just before the ball went over her head.
In the second half, Central Missouri State turned on the offense with the wind at their back. The Jennies took 13 shots in the half, connecting on two to take a 2-0 lead. April Reyes broke the scoreless tie in the 58th minute, when she took advantage of an empty net, when Goold misplayed a ball in the goal area. Twenty minutes later, Jessica Goedeker gave the Jennies the insurance goal they were looking for, making the score 2-0.
The Bearcats best chance to score came in the last minute of the game, when Rory Okey (Soph., Litteton, Colo.) found Gina Christianson (Jr., Fremont, Neb.) in the middle of the field Christianson split the defenders and shot the ball on goal. Jennies goalkeeper Michele Gonzalez made the save to preserve the shutout.
Northwest, now 2-11 on the season and 1-6 in MIAA play, return to the field on Wednesday as they travel to Kirksville. The Bearcats will face No. 21 Truman State in a 2 p.m. stay at Truman Soccer Park.
