'Cats End Winless Streak; Top Emporia State, 3-1
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State's Women's Soccer team snapped their nine-games losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Emporia State on Wednesday at Bearcat Pitch. The victory also put an end to a span of 350 minutes without a goal.
Northwest scored early as Kapua Cabreros (Fr., Kahului, Hawaii) took a feed from Rory Okey (Soph., Littleton, Colo.) and buried it in the right corner to give the 'Cats their first lead in five games. Less than a minute later Emporia State's Hilary Laird tied the score at one.
In the 38th minute, Renee Judd (Jr., Pukalani, Hawaii) found Jill Anderson (Jr., Gladstone, Mo.) in Emporia's penalty area. Anderson punched the ball into the right corner of the goal for the Bearcats second score of the game and her first goal of the year.
Okey once again connected with a streaking Cabreros down field. Cabreros got by one defender and beat the goalkeeper putting the ball in the back of the net for her second goal of the game as time expired in the first half.
In the second half Northwest buckled up its defense, shutting the Hornets out in the second half. Michelle Goold (Fr., Independence, Mo.) made a remarkable save on a ball ticketed for the left corner of the goal. Just before the ball crossed the line, Goold got her fingertips on the ball to knock it away. Goold had four saves in net for the Bearcats.
With the victory the Bearcats are now 2-10 on the season and 1-5 in conference play. The 'Cats will play host to the Jennies of Central Missouri State on Saturday. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. at Bearcat Pitch.
