'Cats Fall in Overtime 1-0 to No. 24 Truman
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State's Women's Soccer team fell to No. 24 Truman State in overtime 1-0, Sunday at Bearcat Pitch. The loss extends the Bearcats losing streak to seven games.
The Bearcats and the Bulldogs found themselves in a defensive battle as neither team could put the ball in the net. In the first half Northwest out shot the Bulldogs 8-6, but couldn't get the go-ahead goal.
The second half started out much the same as the first half, with both teams getting their changes and failing to capitalize. In the middle of the second half the Bearcats had their best chance to score. On a corner kick, Renee Judd (Jr., Pukalani, Hawaii) crossed the ball to Heather Kolbo (So., Nevada, Iowa) where she tried to read it in but Truman goalkeeper Lisa Schmalz knocked it down. Jill Anderson (Jr., Gladstone, Mo.) found the rebound but kicked the ball right to the goalkeeper.
Late in the second half Truman tried to take advantage of southernly wind kicking the ball high in the air, but Bearcat goalkeeper Michelle Goold (Fr., Independence, Mo.) knocked the ball over the back of the goal, preserving the tie. Goold made six saves in the second half, holding the Bulldogs scoreless.
Less than a minute into the overtime, Truman took advantage of a two-on-one to score the game winning goal. Sara Murray passed the ball to Heather Murray (no relation) who beat Goold to the left side.
Northwest, now 1-8 and 0-3 in the MIAA, head to Rolla, Mo. for a conference match-up with Missouri-Rolla Friday. Game time is slated for 5 p.m. at the UMR Soccer Complex. On Saturday, the 'Cats head to Joplin for a game against Missouri Southern. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. at Boden Field.
