'Cats Falter, Fall to Northern State, 5-2
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State's Women's Soccer team dropped their fourth consecutive game of the season. Northern State battled back from a 2-0 deficit to win 5-2.
Northwest started off strong, as they collected two goals in the first five minutes of the game. After a Rory Okey (Soph., Littleton, Colo.) shot was deflected by Jennifer Gnefkow (Sr., Raymore, Mo.), Sarah Wallace (Jr., Raymore, Mo.) buried the ball in the back of the net for the first score of the game. A little over a minute later, Kapua Cabreros (Fr., Kahului, Hawaii) took another feed from Okey and put it past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the season.
From that point on, it was all Northern State. Just 16 seconds after Cabreros's goal, the Wolves got on the board. Laura Finnvik beat goaltender Danielle Lawless (Soph., Denison, Iowa) to pull Northern State within one. It was all defense the rest of the half as the Bearcats clung to a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
Three minutes into the second half, the Wolves tied the game on a goal by Kersten Coulter. Northern State continued its onslught, scoring three more times. The 'Cats couldn't muster much offense and only got two shots on goal.
Lawless, allowed four goals, while making five saves in the loss. Michelle Goold (Fr., Independence, Mo.) made one save in relief, while allowing one goal.
The Bearcats, now 1-5 on the season, return to conference play on Friday, as they head to Emporia State to take part in the Emporia State Invite. The 'Cats will face Emporia at 3 pm on Friday and Rockhurst a 1 pm on Sunday.
