Bearcats Open Season 1-1 At Wayne State Invite

WAYNE, Neb. - The Northwest Missouri State women's soccer team travelled to Nebraska to take part in the Wayne State Invitational and came away with a 1-1 record. The 'Cats rebounded from their 4-1 loss on Saturday to top the Wildcats on Sunday, 3-1. The victory over Wayne State wasthe first every in school history in soccer.

On Saturday, the Bearcats struggled offensiely, collecting only two shots the entire game. Northwest fell behind early when the Jackrabbits' Casey Hitt connected on a penalty kick seven minutes into the game. South Dakota State continued to pour on the offense, scoring twice more before halftime, taking a 3-0 lead into the second half.

Northwest battled defensively, keeping the Jackrabbits scoreless for much of the second half, but gave up goal number four in the 78th minute. Rory Okey (Soph., Littleton, Colo.) got the Bearcats on the board for the first time this season, hitting paydirt in the 89th minue to account for the final score. Michelle Goold (Fr., Independence, Mo.), getting the start for Northwest made five saves in the loss.

On Sunday, the 'Cats took the field looking for their first victory of the season. A strong performance in goal by Danielle Lawless (Soph., Denison, Iowa), who allowed one goal, while making 12 saves, allowing the Bearcats to pick up the 3-1 victory. Jennifer Gnefkow (Sr., Raymore, Mo.) gave Northwest the lead in the tenth minute as she connected on a Jill Anderson (Jr., Gladstone, Mo.) pass. The Bearcats held on to the 1-0 lead heading into the second half.

Late in the second half, the 'Cats scored two goals in a 27 second span, to push the lead to 3-0. Carlie Hoskins (Fr., Kansas City, Mo.) and Heather Kolbo (Soph., Nevada, Iowa) each picked up a goal for Northwest. A Wayne State goal in the 79th minute pulled the Wildcats within two, but they got no closer as the 'Cats picked up the victory.

Northwest, now 1-1 on the season, will hit the road again as they travel to Duluth, Minn. to take part in their Invitational. The 'Cats will face Minnesota State - Mankato on Friday at 3 p.m. After a day off on Saturday, the Bearcats will return to the field on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against the host Minnesota-Duluth.
