'Cats Ends Season With Double OT Victory
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Seldomly used as an offensive player, Danielle Lawless (Fr., Denison, Iowa) made the first goal of her Northwest Missouri State University career count Sunday afternoon.
Lawless, who is also the Bearcats' backup goalkeeper, scored in the 107th minute to give Northwest a 2-1, double-overtime victory over Missouri-Rolla. Her goal gave the Bearcats a victory in their final contest of the 2001 season.
Northwest held a 1-0 lead at halftime. Sarah Wallace (Soph., Raymore, Mo.) scored her fifth goal of the season at 25:30 of the first half. She put a header past Missouri-Rolla net-minder Ana Mora off a beautifully-placed corner kick from the Bearcats' Renee Judd (Fr., Pukalani, Hawaii).
The Lady Miners tied the game 1-1 in the second half. Northwest goalkeeper Kathie Leach (Jr., Lincoln, Neb.) made back-to-back saves under heavy pressure. But UMR's Lauren Wilkinson took the rebound off the second save and put it past Leach. The score remained tied through the end of regulation.
The first overtime was scoreless. But early in the second overtime, Northwest applied some pressure. Wallace sent a crossing pass in front of the net and Lawless, who had only been in the game for five minute put it past Mora in the right corner for the game-winner.
The Bearcats wrapped up their season 6-11-1 overall and 4-7-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play. Missouri-Rolla fell to 4-10-3 and 3-7-2 in the MIAA.
