'Cats String Hornets, Pick Up 2-1 Victory

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State extended its unbeaten streak to three games with a victory over the Emporia State Hornets on Wednesday. The Bearcats used a big second half to win 2-1.

The game started off on a muddy foot as both teams battled through a soggy field. Things started picked up towards the end of the first half as both teams fired shots towards the goal. Emporia State found the back of the net on a perfectly placed shot by Melissa Boeckel just out of goalkeeper Kathie Leach (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.) reach. It was the first goal given up by Leach in 256 minutes. The two teams headed to halftime with Emporia leading 1-0.

The Bearcats tied the game nine minutes into the second half when Emily Winter (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) took a pass from Joni Pusateri (Soph., Belton, Mo.) and beat the goalkeeper, burying it in the back of the net. Northwest took the lead nine minutes later off the foot of Jill Anderson (Soph., Gladstone, Mo.). Katie DeHardt (Sr., Blue Springs, Mo.) fed a pass to Anderson who booted the ball over the goalkeeper’s head. Northwest would hold on to the one-goal lead to pick up their victory of the season. Leach made four saves for Northwest.

With the victory, Northwest is now 3-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference. The ‘Cats will have an 11 day lay-off before taking on Truman State on September 30 in Maryville. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
