'Cats Shut-Out Two, Go 1-0-1 on Weekend

ROLLA, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State Soccer team was undefeated this weekend as they played two conference matches. The 'Cats topped undefeated Southwest Baptist 2-0 on Saturday and battled to a scoreless tie on Sunday against Missouri-Rolla.

In Saturday's game, the two teams battled to a 0-0 game going to halftime in Bolivar. The Bearcats outshot the purple Bearcats 5-3 in the first period, but were unable to sneak one past the goalkeeper. Each goalkeeper made two saves in the period.

In the second period the 'Cats capitalized on two golden opportunities to win the game. The first opportunity came just minutes into the second period, when Kristi Potee (Fr., Independence, Mo.) was taken down inside the goalkeeper's box setting up the 'Cats first penalty kick of the season. Head coach Joann Wolf called on Jenni Hayes (Jr., Omaha, Neb.) to take the PK. Hayes tucked the ball inside the right corner of the goal to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead. The 'Cats played defense for much of the second half, but got an insurance goal with 10 minutes left when Raheema Qureshi (Fr., Sedalia, Mo.) put a free kick in the right corner of the goal for the 'Cats second goal of the game. Goalkeeper Kathie Leach (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.) made eight saves to pick up her first shut-out of the season.

On Sunday, the 'Cats once again played a tough defensive game in which no one came out with a victory. The two teams played two overtimes, each having opportunities to win the game, but neither team was able to bury them. The 'Cats best scoring opportunity came in the first overtime when Jill Anderson (Soph., Gladstone, Mo.) took a cross from Renee Judd (Jr., Pukalani, Haw.) off of her head and it just sailed over the top of the goal. Leach was once again strong in net for the second straight game as she made seven saves to pick up her second shut-out in as many games.

The 'Cats record moves to 2-4-1 and 1-2-1 in conference. Northwest will be back in action on Wednesday as they return home for a conference match-up with Emporia State. This is the second meeting between the two schools this season, Emporia won the first meeting 1-0. Game time is set for 3:00.
