Bearcats Split at Cougar Classic

MORRIS, Minn. - The Northwest Missouri State women's soccer team traveled to Minnesota to take part in the Minnesota-Morris Cougar Classic. The Bearcats won their first game of the season topping Presentation College 10-0 on Saturday and then came up shot on Sunday as they fell to the host school, 2-1.

On Saturday, the 'Cats started the scoring early and kept on scoring. Laura Hampton (Sr., Independence, Mo.) scored the first of her two goals seven minutes into the game as she took a rebound from the foot of Sarah Wallace (Raymore, Mo.) and put it in the back of the net. Jill Anderson (Gladstone, Mo.) scored the next two goals for the 'Cats on assists by Kristi Potee (Fr., Independence, Mo.). Jenni Hayes (Jr., Omaha, Neb.) and Heather Kolbo (Fr., Nevada, Iowa) both scored in the first half to give the 'Cats a 5-0 lead heading into halftime.

Three more Bearcats scored five more goals in the second half to give the 'Cats their first victory of the season. Christine Collins (Soph., Council Bluffs, Iowa) scored a minute into the second half and Hampton got her second goal 15 minutes later. Wallace picked up two goals as well as Raheema Qureshi (Fr., Sedalia, Mo.) who scored the final goal in the game.

On Sunday, the 'Cats played a defensive game with Minn.-Morris. The 'Cats struck first in the first half as Anderson scored her third goal of the season at 36:42 to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead. The lead lasted only five minutes as the Cougars scored to know the game at one heading to the half. The defensive struggle continued into the second half and Northwest was unable to score, but Morris put one in twenty minutes into the second half to give them their first lead of the game. The Cougars held on for the victory. Northwest goalkeeper Danielle Lawless (Fr., Denison, Iowa) made seven saves in the loss.

Anderson and Renee Judd (Jr., Pukalani, Haw.) were selected to the All-Tournament team for their play. The Bearcats record moved to 1-4 on the season. The Bearcats return to the field on Saturday as they head to Bolivar to take on Southwest Baptist. Game time is set for noon.
