Emporia Hands Bearcats Third Straight Loss
EMPORIA, Kan. - Northwest Missouri State's Women's Soccer team fell shot in its bid for the first win of the season as the Emporia State Hornets used a late goal to top the 'Cats, 1-0. This is the Bearcats third straight loss and their second straight shut-out.
The first half was a defensive struggle for both teams as the goalkeepers stood tall in the net. Kathie Leach (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.) stopped four Hornet shots that were headed to the back of the net and Hornet goalkeeper Tiffany Simon stopped the three aimed at her. The teams were knotted at zero heading to the half.
The action picked up in the second half as things got physical. The Bearcats played down a man for the last 30 minutes of the game as Angela Hammon (Jr., Godfrey, Ill.) was given a red card for fighting. The Bearcats responded favorably, putting pressure on the Hornets in the offensive zone. The 'Cats best scoring chance of the game came in the 65th minute as Jill Anderson (Soph., Gladstone, Mo.) put the ball right on the goalkeeper, but she was able to come up with the save to keep the 'Cats scoreless. Emporia scored in the final five minutes of the game on a shot from 25 yards out and over Leach's head. Emporia would hold on for the win to secure their first MIAA victory in school history.
The Bearcats, now 0-3 and 0-2 in conference, will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Morris, Minn. to take part in the Cougar Classic. The 'Cats will look for that elusive first win as they take on Presentation College on Saturday at 1:00.
