'Cats Fall to Lions In MIAA Opener, 1-0
JOPLIN, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State Women's Soccer team lost their MIAA opener as they fell to the Missouri Southern Lady Lions, 1-0 Wednesday night at Boden Field. This marks the third consecutive year that the Bearcats have lost in the MIAA opener and snaps an undefeated streak to the Lions. The 'Cats were previously 2-0-1 versus the Lady Lions.
Things didn't start well for the 'Cats as the game was delayed for 30 minutes due to lightning in the Joplin area. Once the game got under way, it was a defensive struggle throughout most of the game. The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie heading into halftime. The Bearcats managed to collect four shots, two of them on goal, while the Lions put three shots on net out of the seven they took. Bearcats goalkeeper Katie Leach (Jr., Lincoln, Neb.) was equal to the task and saved them all in the first half.
Kayie Griffon broke the scoreless tie in the 59th minute of the second half, taking a pass from Katie Gaarder and past Leach to score what proved to be the game-winning goal. The Bearcats got their offense from midfielder Jill Anderson (Soph., Gladstone, Mo.) and Renee Judd (Jr., Pukalani, Haw.). Each player took two shots, two on goal. Leach made six saves in the loss for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats saw their record fall to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in conference. The 'Cats will be back in action on Tuesday, September 4, when they travel to Emporia to take on a new conference rival in the Hornets. Game time is set for 8 pm at the TRSYA Complex in West Emporia.
