'Cats Come Up Short, Fall 2-1 in Season Opener
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest's bid for a season opening win fell short as the Wildcats from Wayne State topped the 'Cats 2-1 at Bearcat Pitch on Saturday.
The Wildcats struck first on the scoreboard in the 29th minute of the first period. Wayne State's Tanya Mitchell intercepted a pass and shot it over the head of Bearcat goalkeeper Kathie Leach (Jr., Lincoln, Neb.) to give the Wildcats their first score. The Bearcats tightened up the defense and kept the game close the rest of the half and were trailing 1-0 heading into halftime.
Wayne State widened the lead in the opening minutes of the second half, as Sarah Herrick split the defenders and shot it to the right of the goal to put the Wildcats up 2-0. Sarah Wallace (Soph., Raymore, Mo.) gave the 'Cats some momentum as she battled with Brienne Abshier and came out on top. The tussel earned both players a yellow card, but gave the 'Cats some life. The Bearcats scored int he 73rd minute as Joni Pusateri (Soph., Belton, Mo.) took a shot that sailed over the goalkeeper's head. The 'Cats battled but couldn't tie up the score and fell 2-1 to the Wildcats. Leach made seven saves on the day and allowed only two goals in her first start this season.
The Bearcats fall to 0-1 on the season and will be back in action on August 28 as they travel to Joplin, Mo. for their first conference match of the season against Missouri Southern. Game time is set fo 7:00 p.m.
