Northwest Missouri State head volleyball coach Jessica Rinehart has announced the hiring of Amy Phelps to the position of assistant volleyball coach. Phelps has been the assistant at Alaska Fairbanks for the past six seasons.
Phelps began her coaching career at her alma mater, Graceland University, where she assisted with both the men's and women's teams. In 2002, the Lady Jackets were Region V finalists and qualified for the NAIA National Championships. Before heading north, Phelps spent two seasons as the graduate assistant at Northwest in 2003 and 2004.
"We're extremely excited to have Amy join us at Northwest," said coach Rinehart. "She brings a great deal of experience as an assistant coach at a solid Division II program. In addition, Amy was a former Bearcat, so she knows both the school and surrounding area well, which is a bonus.
"Amy will serve as our primary recruiter and specifically work with our setters and middle hitters. We feel Amy will bring a lot to the table and help push our team to reach an elite level."
A setter at Graceland, Phelps earned first-team all-conference and all-region honors and was named an honorable mention NAIA All-American as well as an NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete. Her team won both the regular season and postseason titles in the Heart of America Conference and she served as a co-captain.
In her time at Fairbanks, Phelps helped coach 10 All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference selections, 31 GNAC academic all-stars, one GNAC Newcomer of the Year and one GNAC Freshman of the Year.
