Bearcats finish sweep of MIAA regular season
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State men’s tennis team finished a perfect MIAA regular season with an 8-0 win over Truman State Wednesday.
The Bearcats improved to 17-3 on the season and the 5-0 record in league play clinched a No. 1 seed in this weekend’s MIAA Championships. Truman State fell to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in conference action to earn the No. 5 seed.
The Bearcats easily swept through doubles play with a pair of 8-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The win at the No. 1 position was the ninth straight for the duo of Sergio De Vilchez and Lluis Altimires and moved their record to 24-5 on the season.
De Vilchez battled a tough match at No.1 singles with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-3) win over Jake Ohlhausen. The freshman finished the regular season 21-6 at the No. 1 position.
Alvaro Riveros also completed an impressive regular season with his 10th straight victory at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
The Bearcats could face the Bulldogs in the second round of the MIAA Championships as Northwest received a bye with the No. 1 seed. The winner of No. 5 seed Truman State and No. 4 seed Nebraska-Kearney will meet Northwest on Saturday at 9 a.m. The championship match is set for a 9 a.m. start Sunday at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
