Bearcat men cruise by Hornets
EMPORIA, Kan. – Just one day after picking up a crucial MIAA win the Northwest Missouri State men’s tennis team breezed past Emporia State, 8-1 Saturday to stay perfect in conference action.
The 26th-ranked Bearcats moved to 16-4 on the season and stay perfect at 3-0 in MIAA play. Emporia State fell to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference as Northwest will finish up the regular season on Tuesday at Washburn.
Northwest picked up two wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to lead heading into singles play. The loss at No. 1 doubles was only the fourth loss all season for the tandem of Mario Jakovljevic and Jose Ortega.
After moving into singles the Bearcats wasted no time picking up points and sweeping all six positions.
Led by senior Calvin Patterson, who played in his second game after missing two weeks due to injury, earned a tough win at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3.
The Bearcats breezed through the rest of singles play as Rafael Bugiga captured the final point at No. 3 singles with a hard fought 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) victory to close out the Hornets.
