SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The No. 26 Northwest Missouri State men’s tennis squad saw its six-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of No. 11 Ouachita Baptist Thursday afternoon falling 5-1 in regional tennis action.
The Bearcats, who are also ranked No. 6 in the South Central Region, fell to 14-4 on the year. The Tigers who are ranked No. 1 in the South Central Region improved to 10-6 on the season.
Northwest picked up a win at No. 1 doubles with Mario Jakovljevic and Jose Ortega winning 8-3 to improve their season doubles record to 13-3. The duo has also won their last five matches in doubles.
The Bearcats did not fare as well at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. Guilherme Narducci and Rafael Bugiga fell in a tough match 8-6 as Jason Harris and Luis Altimires dropped their No. 2 doubles match 8-1.
Rain moved into the Springfield area late Thursday and forced three unfinished matches. However OBU took the three matches needed to claim the 5-1 win snapping the Bearcats win streak.
Altimires fought the closest singles match at No. 4 singles falling 6-2, 6-4.
Bugiga and Harris dropped the other two matches at No. 2 and No. 5 singles giving OBU its fifth point and the win.
Northwest continues a hard stretch to close out the regular season. The Bearcats take on MIAA rival and the seventh-ranked team in the South Central Region, Southwest Baptist, on Friday as they continue with a Saturday afternoon match at Emporia State.
