Bearcats upset No. 20 Drury
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State men’s tennis team earned its biggest win of the season knocking off 20th-ranked Drury University on Saturday 6-3, after falling to 18th-ranked Cameron 6-3 on Thursday.
The loss to Cameron was the first of the season while the win over Drury improved the Bearcats record to 6-1 on the year. Northwest continues its tough stretch as they hit the road for non-conference match with national power Abilene Christian on Tuesday.
The Bearcats took points from the Aggies in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to lead heading into singles play. However, Cameron fought back to take the win and five needed points in singles for the win.
Rafael Bugiga claimed Northwest’s lone singles win at the No. 4 position winning 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
On Saturday the Bearcats rebounded in a big way to take down national power Drury at home.
Again Northwest led after doubles action with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, 8-5 and 8-4 respectively.
With each match going down to the wire, the Bearcats’ Calvin Patterson started the charge with a 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 win at the No.1 singles position.
Mario Jakovljevic followed at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win before Guilherme Narducci and Luis Altimires closed out wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
The win gave head coach Mark Rosewell his 891st win of his career moving him closer to No. 900.
