Northwest cleans house with All-MIAA selections

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Senior Malcolm Harrison is the MIAA Player of the Year, senior Giovanni Aurrichio is the Sportsmanship Award winner and Mark Rosewell earned his eighth Coach of the Year Award as the 2011 MIAA Men's Tennis Team was announced Wednesday by the league office.

Rosewell led Northwest to a 19-5 record, its sixth-straight postseason appearance and MIAA regular season and tournament championships. The Bearcats were 4-0 in league play and won their 16th MIAA championship - a league record.

Harrison is the fourth men's tennis player to earn Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons. Harrison went 20-2 in singles competition this spring and was a perfect 4-0 in MIAA play. He won 17 matches in a row at one time and just two of his victories required a third set. Harrison's 34 wins during the 2010-11 academic year are a program record. Auricchio becomes the first Bearcat since Mark Ardizzone in 1993 to win the Sportsmanship Award.

Senior Vijit Sehgal at number three singles and Auricchio at number six singles joined Harrison in earning first-team honors. Sehgal went 18-3 in singles matches this season and was 3-0 in the MIAA. Auricchio was named to the first team for the second consecutive season as he went 13-3 during the spring and also went 3-0 against MIAA opponents.

The doubles duo of Harrison and Daniel Quesada at number two and the team of Auricchio and Philip Hultquist at number three were also first team selections. Harrison and Quesada went 16-1 this season and won their final 16 matches as a team. Auricchio and Hultquist were 13-9 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA as a tandem this season. Auricchio has now been a first-team selection at number three doubles twice in his career.

Calvin Patterson (two singles), Hultquist (four singles) and Quesada (five singles) all were second team selections. Patterson was 16-4 on the year and went 3-1 in league play. Hultquist was 12-10 and 2-1 in the MIAA at number four. Quesada compiled a 14-6 record this season and was 2-1 in league play.

At number one doubles the duo of Patterson and Sehgal rounded out Northwest's honors with a second-team nod. The team went 12-7 on the year and were3-1 in MIAA play. For Sehgal, it is his third all-MIAA selection in doubles play for his career.
