Northwest edges No. 29 Midwestern State
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-With the match all square at 4-4, Northwest Missouri State's Daniel Quesada won six straight points to win a third-set, super tiebreaker against Rory Boer to secure the winning point in the Bearcats' 5-4 win against No. 29 Midwestern State Friday at the St. Joseph Tennis and Swim Club.
Northwest (10-2) avenged a 5-4 loss to Midwestern State a year ago and won its fourth straight match. The Bearcats are ranked 19th nationally and second in the South Central Region. The Mustangs (10-3) are ranked fifth in the region.
Four of the six singles matches required a third-set, super tiebreaker and both teams won two of them. Coincidentally, Northwest won the first set of all four matches. Quesada won 7-6, 4-6, 10-8 at number five singles. Vijit Sehgal defeated Midwestern State's Luke Joyce, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7, at three singles.
The Mustangs' wins came at singles number two, four and six. Vjekoslav Stipanic came back to beat Calvin Patterson 5-7, 7-6, 10-5 at two. Tiago Vilarinho did the same against Giovanni Aurcchio at six, winning 2-6, 6-3, 10-8. Bo Zaputovic defeated Philip Hultquist in straight sets at number four.
The difference in the match was in the doubles play where Northwest gained a 2-1 edge. Patterson and Sehgal beat Stipanic and Joyce, 8-6, at the top position. Quesada and partner Malcolm Harrison earned an 8-3 win against Zaputovic and Mario Urban. Harrison also beat Urban in singles play, 6-2, 6-4, to improve to 26-1 this season. Harrison (12-0) and Sehgal (11-0) are undefeated this spring.
