Northwest wins big in conference opener
MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State men's tennis team made quick work of Emporia State on Thursday afternoon to win its MIAA opener 8-1 over the Hornets from Frank Grube courts.
The Bearcats (6-1, 1-0 MIAA) swept singles play without dropping a single set. Calvin Patterson and Giovanni Auricchio had the strongest day for Northwest at number two and six singles, respectively. Both won 6-0 and 6-0.
Malcolm Harrison continued his strong start to the season, winning 6-0 and 6-1. While Philip Hultquist won his match 7-5, 7-5, Vijit Sehgal won 6-1 and 6-1. Daniel Quesada rounded-out singles competition with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Northwest's only loss of the match came in doubles play. The teams of Patterson and Sehgal and Harrison and Auricchio each won 8-2 in their doubles matches.
Up next for the Bearcats will be a trip to Springfield, Mo., as Northwest will face 15th-ranked Drury in a non-conference tussle on Saturday.
