Top seeds head to championship Sunday
MARYVILLE, Mo.-The top seeds in both singles and doubles remain in the hunt for titles following day two of the ITA South Central Regional Championships hosted by Northwest.
The top two seeds of the doubles tournament will compete in Sunday's final. Abilene Christian's Hans Hack and Bryan Joiner, the bracket's top seed, lost just seven games in advancing to the final. The duo won twice Saturday including an 8-1 semifinal victory against third-seeded Domingos Carissimo and Jorge Margiotta from Southwest Baptist.
Abilene Christian will take on St. Edward's top tandem of Edward Boone and Mick Walter who earned an 8-5 quarterfinal win against Abilene's Nick Plum and Jake Hendrie Saturday before topping Northwest's Malcolm Harrison and Vijit Sehgal, 8-4, in the semis.
Harrison is the top seed in the singles tournament and earned two more straight-set wins Saturday to move into the semifinals. Harrison hasn't lost more than three games in a set through four matches during the tournament.
Harrison will meet East Central's Andres Nunez in one semifinal while Carissimo and Hach dual in the other. Hach is the lone tournament participant still dueling in both singles and doubles draws. None of the four remaining singles participants have dropped a set during the tournament.
All matches Sunday will take place on the Frank Grube Courts. The two singles semifinals will begin at 9 a.m. with the final to begin at approximately 11:30 a.m. The start time of the doubles final will be determined by the results of Hach in singles play.
Sunday's two winners will earn a spot at the National Small College Championships to be held Oct. 14-17 in Mobile, Ala.
