MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State senior and top-seeded Malcolm Harrison earned two straight-set victories Friday to advance to day two of the 2010 ITA South Central Regional Championships hosted by Northwest.

Sixteen singles players and eight doubles tandems remain to compete for a place at the National Small College Championships to be held Oct. 14-17 in Mobile, Ala. Competitors return to the courts Saturday at 9 a.m. with the champions to be crowned Sunday.

Harrison is one of five seeded singles players who advanced to the round of 16. St. Edward's Edward Boone, the tournament's two seed, was not so fortunate.

Boone lost a 10-7, third-set super breaker to Cameron freshman Patrick Eichler in the first round. Eichler went on to beat Washburn's Steven Fletcher, 6-4, 6-4, in round two to advance to Saturday. He'll face Northwest's Calvin Patterson at 9 a.m. on the High Rise Courts.

Sixth-seeded John Strahl of Abilene Christian hurt his ankle while leading a second-round match against Incarnate Word's Leury Arias and was forced to retire. Strahl also pulled out of the doubles competition and was replaced by teammate Alfredo Delsiati.

Abilene Christian has a tournament-best four singles players and two doubles tandems that advanced to day two. Eldad Campbell, the three seed, dropped just two games in advancing to the third round. Hans Hach, seeded seventh, also advanced.

Hach and teammate Bryan Joiner are the top seed of the doubles tournament and had little trouble advancing to Saturday's quarterfinals. The duo beat Nathan Peters and Victor Bello of Newman, 8-1, in round one and Incarnate Word's Pierce Brandan and David Ballenger, 8-2, in round two.

The top seven seeds in the doubles tournament, each representing a different institution, advanced to the quarterfinals. Abilene Christian's Nick Plum and Jake Hendrie upset Andrew Nunez and Stefan Stein from East Central, 9-7, to crash the party.

Play resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday with four singles matches each on the Frank Grube and High Rise courts. The quarterfinals of the singles draw will be played afterwards at Frank Grube at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The doubles tournament begins with quarterfinal matches in the afternoon and with the semifinal matches to follow. All doubles matches will be played on the Frank Grube courts.
