Northwest dominates competition at Truman
KIRKSVILLE, Mo.-Six Northwest tennis players combined to go 28-3 in singles competition at the Truman Tennis Tournament hosted Friday and Saturday. Northwest was joined by participants from Truman, Quincy and Johnson County.
All matches were one set played to eight games. Of the 275 games the six Bearcats combined to play, 220 were won by Northwest (80 percent).
Malcolm Harrison and Calvin Patterson competed in Flight 1. Harrison went 6-0 and lost just three games out of 51 to take the Flight 1 title. Patterson finished 4-0 and surrendered just four games. Two of his matches were cancelled due to rain.
Giovanni Auricchio and Vijit Sehgal represented Northwest in Flight 2 and both finished undefeated. Auricchio went 6-0 while winning 48 of 56 games. Sehgal lost just five games and finished 5-0.
Northwest's Daniel Quesada and Truman's Mike Merchant finished 5-0 to share the crown in Flight 3. The duo's head-to-head match was cancelled due to the weather. Quesada won 40 games and dropped just nine. Teammate Jeff Williams finished 2-3 in five completed matches.
The Truman tournament was a precursor to the men's 2010 ITA South Central Region Singles and Doubles Championships hosted by Northwest Oct. 1-3. Matches are set to take place on the Frank Grube and High Rise Courts on the Bearcat campus beginning Friday morning.
