Tennis Falls 5-4 in Round of 32
AUSTIN, Texas-Three singles matches required a third set and St. Edward's won two out of three to beat Northwest Missouri State 5-4 and advance to the national tennis tournament in Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 12-15.
St. Edward's Bernie Lancaster beat Giovanni Auricchio 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 6 singles for the clinching point. The Hilltoppers won two out of three doubles matches and split the singles matches 3-3.
The Bearcats won the top three singles matches while St. Edward's won at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. Northwest's Malcolm Harrison beat nationally-ranked Edward Boone in straight sets and Bearcats Vijit Sehgal and Felipe Gennari each upset regionally-ranked foes.
The loss ends Northwest's 11-match win streak. The Bearcats end their season with a program-record 22 wins against five defeats.
