Men's Tennis Nets Fifth Straight NCAA Tournament Bid
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's men's tennis program has qualified for the NCAA tournament for the fifth consecutive season and for the 10th time in the last 11 years as the brackets were released today by the NCAA Division II Tennis Committee.
The Bearcats (21-4), MIAA champions and seeded fourth, are headed to Austin, Texas, and will take on fifth-seeded Cameron (17-9) in a first-round match Thursday, May 6. Northwest beat the Aggies 5-3 in St. Joseph, Mo., back on March 12. Cameron was the runner-up in the Lone Star Conference this season.
The winner will face top-seeded and Heartland Conference champion St. Edward's (10-8) Friday, May 7. The Hilltoppers beat Northwest 5-3 in Dallas, Texas, back on March 20.
The winner of Friday's match will be one of 16 teams headed to the finals in Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 12-15. Central Florida Sports Commission and Rollins College will serve as tournament hosts.
The Northwest men are making their 22nd overall postseason appearance and 13th since the shift to the team format in 1983. The Bearcats are 8-4 in first-round action since 1995. Northwest picked up its MIAA-record 15th conference championship Sunday in Kansas City, Mo.
Head Coach Mark Rosewell is 12-12 in 12 NCAA tournament appearances with the Northwest men. The Bearcats are 8-4 in the first round and have made four trips to the round of 16 (1995, 2003, 2006, 2007).
