Northwest Wins Record 15th MIAA Championship
KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Top-seeded Northwest Missouri State beat third-seeded Washburn 5-2 in the championship match of the 2010 MIAA Men's Tennis Tournament Sunday. It is the Bearcats' first title since 2002 and breaks a tie with Southwest Baptist for the most championships in conference history. Northwest has won 15 MIAA titles.
The Bearcats (21-4) have won 10 straight matches, a string that began with a 5-4 win against Washburn back on April 8. Northwest won two of three doubles matches and got singles wins from Malcolm Harrison, Calvin Patterson and Giovanni Auricchio to win the crown.
Northwest defeated Truman, 5-1 in one of two semifinal matches earlier in the day while Washburn defeated second-seeded Southwest Baptist 5-2.
The win assures Northwest of its 10th NCAA tournament appearance in 11 years and 22nd overall.
