Tennis Teams Claim Tournament's Top Seeds
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's men's and women's tennis teams will be the top seeds of the MIAA Tennis Tournaments to take place Saturday and Sunday at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo.
The Bearcat women (15-6), the defending champions of this event, are the top seed after going 7-0 against MIAA competition this season to win the regular season title outright. Northwest will take on eighth-seeded Missouri Western in an opening-round game Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The Bearcats have beaten the Griffons in 26 consecutive matches, including a 9-0 win Monday in St. Joseph.
Truman and Nebraska-Omaha are the four and five seeds, respectively. The Bearcats beat Truman 6-3 and Nebraska-Omaha 5-4 in duals this week. Washburn and Southwest Baptist are the two and three seeds, respectively, on the other side of the bracket.
The Bearcat men (19-4) finished in a three-way tie for the regular season crown with Washburn and Southwest Baptist, but are the top seed after winning a drawing held Thursday. Northwest, along with second-seeded Washburn, will receive first-round byes.
Southwest Baptist, the three seed, will take on Emporia State in a first-round match. Northwest will take on the winner of fourth-seeded Truman and fifth-seeded Nebraska-Omaha at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The Bearcats beat Truman 8-1 and Nebraska-Omaha 9-0 in duals this week.
The championship match for the women will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday with the men's championship to follow at noon. The winners of the tournaments will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Northwest's women are looking to make their 16th straight NCAA appearance while the men are looking to make it five in a row.
