Bearcats Shutout UNO, Clinch Share of MIAA Title
OMAHA, Neb.-The 21st-ranked Northwest Missouri State men's tennis squad collected its eighth straight victory of the season Tuesday afternoon as the Bearcats blanked MIAA foe Nebraska-Omaha 9-0. The win gives Northwest a share of the MIAA regular season title with Washburn and Southwest Baptist. Each team is atop the MIAA standings with a 4-1 record.
Malcolm Harrison and Felipe Gennari each won their singles matches in straight sets, moving them to 20-3 and 20-10 overall respectively in singles play. Harrison and Gennari join Calvin Patterson with 20 wins on the season. Patterson moved to 21-3 with his 6-4, 6-2 win over Eric McKnight.
Vijit Sehgal, Ryan Westerhof and Giovanni Auricchio also were victorious in singles play against the Mavericks, each won in straight sets.
In doubles play, the team of Harrison and Daniel Quesada won 8-4, Westerhof and Sehgal picked-up an 8-5 victory and the team of Gennari and Patterson won their doubles match 8-3.
Northwest, who improved to 19-4 overall, will travel to Kansas City this weekend to play in the MIAA Championships Saturday afternoon at the Plaza tennis courts. This is the first time the MIAA has recognized a regular season champion. The Bearcats have won 14 previous titles in the MIAA championship tournament.
