Harrison, Castilla Sweep MIAA Tennis Awards
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State junior Malcolm Harrison and senior Veronica Castilla have been named the MIAA Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for the period ended March 23. It's the first weekly honors handed out by the league this season.
Harrison, a native of Kansas City, Mo., is 11-0 in singles play and 8-3 in doubles matches with partner Raphael Oliveria. The wins include victories against the top players from five nationally-ranked Division II programs and a victory against Patrick Smith of Division I Missouri-Kansas City. Harrison has dropped one set in singles play all season.
Castilla, a native of Puertollano, Spain, is earning player of the week honors for the third time in the last two seasons. Castilla is 6-2 in singles play and 5-2 in doubles matches through the team's first eight duals. She's played mostly number three singles and teams with Lisa Pendrak at number two doubles. Castilla has won 53 singles matches and 66 doubles matches in her four-year career at Northwest.
Both Northwest tennis programs are ranked nationally with the men (8-3) at No. 26 and the women (5-5) at No. 44. Both teams are competing against Abilene Christian Wednesday in Abilene, Texas.
