Northwest Smashes Defending Summit League Champs
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's men's tennis team rolled to a convincing 8-1 win against Division I Missouri-Kansas City Wednesday on the Frank Grube Courts. The Bearcats (6-1) swept all three doubles matches and earned five straight-set wins in singles play.
Missouri-Kansas City (5-5), last season's Summit League Tournament champion and an NCAA tournament qualifier, got its point from Gustavo Guerin at number two singles. The 'Roos played without two-time Summit League MVP Bret Berryman and number three singles player Serge Ristivojevic.
Northwest's top player, Malcolm Harrison, remained undefeated in both doubles and singles play. Harrison and teammate Raphael Oliveira beat Guerin and Patrick Smith 8-6 at number one doubles. Harrison and Smith then squared off in the featured match at number one singles. Harrison won a 7-3 tiebreaker to take the first set, then got an early break in the second en route to a 6-2 win. Harrison is 7-0 in both singles and doubles this season.
Bearcats Vijit Sehgal teamed with Ryan Westerhoff to earn an 8-1 win at number two doubles. Northwest's Calvin Patterson beat Erwin Quintanilla, 6-2, 6-1, at number three singles. Westerhoff, Daniel Quesada and Giovanni Auricchio were straight-set winners at number four, five and six singles, respectively.
Northwest begins a string of six road matches in six days Friday against East Central. The Bearcats will also compete against Southwest Baptist, St. Edwards, Dallas Baptist, Midwestern State and Abilene Christian on its Spring Break tour.
