Tennis Takes Two from UMSL
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's men's and women's tennis teams swept matches with Missouri-St. Louis Friday at the St. Joseph Tennis Club. The Bearcat men (5-0) won 5-0 while Northwest's women (3-1) won 5-1.
Northwest's men remained unbeaten in double play this season (15-0) after winning all three matches Friday. The Bearcats' won two matches by a score of 8-4 and a third by a score of 8-0.
The Triton women's lone point came at number one doubles where Stephanie Thompson and Sai Pujitha Bandi defeated Erika Leston and Emily Hoffman 8-4. Northwest took the other two doubles matches 8-2.
Malcolm Harrison and Felipe Gennari, Northwest's number one and number two singles players, respectively, earned straight-set victories to close out the men's match. Harrison improved to 5-0 in singles play and is 10-0 overall. The other four singles matches were unfinished.
Leston fought back from one set down to beat Thompson, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, at number one singles. Northwest's Lisa Pendrak defeated Bandi by winning a 10-8 super tiebreaker at number two. Veronica Castilla earned Northwest's fifth point, defeating Altanzul Gombo 6-2, 6-0. The final three singles matches were unfinished.
Northwest continues play Sunday with men's and women's matches against Drury in Springfield, Mo. Match times are 10 a.m.
