Bearcats Reach Semis, Quarters at ITA Regional
ABILENE, Texas-Northwest Missouri State doubles tandem Vijit Sehgal and Ryan Westerhof advanced to the semifinals and Felipe Gennari reached the quarterfinals to highlight Bearcat finishes in the ITA South Central Regional Doubles and Singles Championships hosted by Abilene Christian Friday through Sunday.
Unseeded, Sehgal and Westerhof advanced to the final four before losing to eventual champions Vjekoslav Stipanic and Bo Ziputovic of Midwestern State. The Northwest duo dropped the first set in each of their first three matches, won the second and advanced by winning super tiebreakers of 10-3 in the first round, 10-6 in the second and 10-5 in the quarterfinals.
Sehgal and Westerhof upset the fifth-seeded Washburn duo of Simon Blondin and Ryan Ward in the second round, avenging an 8-6 loss to the same Ichabod team in early September.
Gennari and Daniel Quesada won their first two matches of the doubles tournament to reach the quarterfinals before losing to Incarnate Word's Max Moreau and Alex Wieland. Moreau and Wieland would go on to place second after losing a 10-8 super tiebreaker to Stipanic and Ziputovic in the final.
Gennari and Quesada both won their first match of the singles' tournament. Gennari beat Zaputovic, 6-3, 6-1, in the second round and topped Abilene Christian's Bryan Joiner in the third, 6-4, 7-6. Gennari lost to Incarnate Word's Francisco Segura, the tournament's three seed, in the quarterfinals. Segura finished second after losing a 10-5 super tiebreaker to Washburn's Ryan Ward.
The tournament served as the final fall competitions for the Bearcats. Northwest will begin team competitions in February.
