
Topeka, Kan. –The Northwest Missouri State men’s and women’s tennis teams opened up their 2009 campaigns at the Washburn Invitational on Sept. 4-5. For the men it was a very competitive weekend with two champions and two runner-ups.
In the “A” draw Northwest’s Felipe Gennari was defeated in the finals by Washburn’s Ryan Ward 6-7, 6-4 and 0-1. In the consolation round Vijit Sehgal defeated Ryan Harris of Emporia 6-0, 6-3.
In the “B” draw it was another Bearcat who was defeated in the finals. This time Giovanni Auricchio was beaten in straight sets by Adam Rens of Washburn 2-6 and 2-6.
Calvin Patterson won the men’s “C” draw for the Bearcats. Patterson defeated Washburn’s Emmanuel Laurent 6-4 and 6-1. In men’s doubles it was Gennari and Daniel Quesada who took home the title for Northwest defeating Ward and Simon Blondin of Washburn 8-6.
In the women’s “A” draw Erika Leston defeated teammate Lisa Pendrak in the consolation finals 6-1, 6-4. In “B” Lindsay Weideman was defeated by Whitney Zitsch of Washburn 0-6 and 3-6 in the second round of competition.
In the women’s “C” draw Allison Wuff and Emily Hoffman were both defeated in the consolation round. Wuff was beaten by Annie Doole of Washburn 0-8 and Hoffman by Rockhurst’s Jaycie Schmidt 4-6, 6-0 and 0-1.
On Friday the women travel to the Truman Invitational in Kirksville, Mo. The invite start time is set for 4 p.m. The men will travel to Truman the following Friday as well for the men’s invitational
