Northwest Tennis Teams Fall in First Round
Men's Box Score vs. St. Edward's | Women's Box Score vs. Northeastern State
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's men's and women's tennis teams lost by identical 5-0 scores to St. Edward's and Northeastern State, respectively, in the first round of the NCAA tournament Thursday. The men end their season at 14-8 while the women finish at 16-6.
St. Edward's backed up its 6-3 win against Northwest's men during the regular season by sweeping all three doubles matches and scoring straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles Thursday in Lawton, Okla. The Hilltoppers (13-11) advanced to face host-Cameron (20-9) Friday at 10 a.m.
Northwest's Vijit Sehgal and Giovanni Auricchio each won the first set of their respective singles matches before play ended. St. Edward's held a one-set lead at No. 6 singles while the No. 2 singles match was on serve in the first set.
Bearcat senior Jordan Lipira held the only Northwest lead in the women's match against Northeastern State (19-4) in San Marcos, Texas, when play ended. The RiverHawks swept the three doubles matches and earned straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles to advance to Friday's second-round match with St. Edward's (17-6).
