Northwest Dealt a Semifinal Loss By Southwest Baptist
KANSAS CITY, Mo.-No. 21 Southwest Baptist proved too much for 25th-ranked Northwest Missouri State Saturday, winning an MIAA tournament semifinal match 5-1 at the Plaza Tennis Center.
The win avenged a 6-3 loss to Northwest earlier this season. Southwest Baptist advances to Sunday's final where top-seeded Washburn awaits.
Northwest won all three doubles matches in its March 14 win against the purple Bearcats. Southwest Baptist turned two of those losses into wins Saturday and posted convincing wins in singles play to upset the second-seeded green Bearcats.
Southwest Baptist earned straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles to clinch the match, but also held a 6-1, 5-1 lead at No. 2 singles before play ended. Northwest's Giovanni Auricchio held a one-set lead against Jorge Palacios at No. 5 singles in the only other match which got underway.
Calvin Patterson and Tony Adeyemi beat Agustin Mollar and Tyler Welch at No. 3 doubles for the second time this season for the Bearcats' lone point of the match. Southwest Baptist won rematches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles after losing to the same Northwest duos back in March.
Northwest will learn its postseason fate Wednesday when the 64-team NCAA tournament bracket is released. The Bearcats have reached the tournament in eight of the last nine seasons.
