Northwest Sweeps Graceland on Senior Day
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's tennis teams final tune-ups prior to this weekend's MIAA tournaments resulted in two impressive wins Wednesday as the Bearcat women swept the Yellowjackets 9-0 while the men handed Graceland its third loss of the season, 6-3.
Northwest seniors Daniel Usieto, Lina Gomez and Jordan Lipira competed in their final matches at Frank Grube Courts and didn't disappoint the home crowd. Gomez and Lipira each won 12 of 14 games in recording straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Usieto teamed with Vijit Sehgal to down Graceland's top doubles duo, 8-4.
Northwest's senior trio has combined for 376 collegiate victories. Lipira won her 148th career match - good for fifth in program history. Her 77 doubles wins ties Gena Lindsay for third place on the Bearcats' all-time list.
Erika Leston and Veronica Castilla improved their singles win streaks to 17 and 12, respectively. Leston improved to 24-1 and has the fourth-most single-season wins in program history.
Northwest's women lost just eight games in six singles matches and won 24 of 29 doubles games.
The Bearcat men trailed 2-1 after doubles play, but won five of six singles matches to beat the ninth-ranked program at the NAIA level. Felipe Gennari earned his 17th singles victory with a 7-6, 6-4 decision against Brett Waite. Gennari and Usieto are both 17-6 in singles play this season.
Sehgal, Giovanni Auricchio and Calvin Patterson each earned straight-set wins in singles play. Ryan Westerhof dropped the first set to Thomas Brodbeck before rallying to take the next two, 6-2, 6-1.
