'Roos Edge Bearcats, 4-3
KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's men's tennis team came within a point of upending Division I foe UMKC Wednesday at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City. The Kangaroos earned the doubles' point and won three of six singles matches to earn a 4-3 win.
It's the second loss in 10 matches for the Bearcats (13-5), who were coming off three straight 9-0 victories. UMKC improved to 12-6.
Division I scoring uses the best-of-three doubles matches to account for one team point, whereas Division II counts each match separately to arrive at nine total points.
The 'Roos earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to capture the doubles point, then won at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Patrick Smith dropped the first set to Northwest's Felipe Gennari, but won the final two for the deciding point in the match.
Daniel Usieto took down the 'Roos' top player, Bret Berryman, 6-4, 6-1, to improve to 16-5 on the season. Giovanni Auricchio and Calvin Patterson also earned straight-set wins for the Bearcats.
